Create your own thing (by imitating others)

So much of tumblr and social media in general is about reblogging, retweeting, reposting. I think that reposting the content of others can be a good thing, I just wish we were more excited about creating our own things.

It’s hard to be creative though, and it’s hard to start if you don’t feel as though you have a distinctive voice or something interesting to say. Here’s my advice: if you don’t know how to create, imitate. Instead of reposting something you see or read that inspires you, copy it, play with it a bit so that it’s different, cite your inspiration (trust me, acknowledged imitation truly is a great form of flattery), post that.

I learned to write and take photographs because I copied the styles of others that I liked. A lot of emerging writers I respect a lot got their start in fanfiction, a total copy/paste job. I still imitate others sometimes, but mostly it’s helped me find my own voice, some kind of intersection between all of my inspirations plus my own interests and background. You will never develop that through reblogging.

Congruity is about finding logical answers and cohesion in an inconsistent world. I blog about language, art and the politics of everyday life. I cover debates from new perspective, and try to find sensible answers through the muck. And pretty pictures. Mostly of cats.
